Break up of the win..

The Janata Dal (U)/Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in Bihar took a beating in the Assembly by-polls losing 13 of the 18 seats to the opposition parties including 9 seats to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) combined.

For Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, however, the major shocker was the defeat of Shyam Rajak who ditched his former boss Lalu Prasad Yadav in favor of JD-U shortly after the disastrous losses of both RJD and LJP in the last Lok Sabha elections in Bihar.

Rajak who was fielded from Phulwari Sharif, his former constituency, lost to his RJD rival Uday Manjhi in what was seen as the 'Battle Royale' between the two warring leaders - Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav.

While JD-U managed to score victories at Bagaha, Dhoraiya, and Triveniganj, its ally BJP won at Begusarai and Chainpur.

Yadav's RJD emerged victorious at Phulwari Sharif, Aurai, Ramgarh, Bochaha, and Kalyanpur while Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP won at Warisnagar, Araria and 2 seats in Bodh Gaya.

Congress, in the meantime, managed to save its face by scoring victories in Chenari and Simri Bakhtiarpur while Mayawati's Bahujan Samajwadi Party claimed victory at Nautan constituency.

Independent candidate Shanti Sharma was declared victorious at Ghosi seat.

Results from Munger were awaited though sources said RJD candidate was leading over his NDA counterpart during the last count.

Polls were held in two phases on September 10 and September 15 amidst tight security at all booths in 18 constituencies.
